Understanding Fear, Function, and Conscious Programming in Classical Samurai Martial Arts
This is in response to a question at our annual Gathering of the Clan in regards to conscious programming. Our normal, fear based, fight-flight programming does not allow higher physical, mental, and spiritual function. What is the process for programming for superior function that is the basis of high level Samurai martial arts? This talk gives some insight into that process.

Foundation of Kenjutsu 5th in a series on Kuzushi, Gathering/Unbalancing
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Год назад
Putting this aspect of kuzushi together we use two training partners. It is essential to learn this method of moving and unbalancing an opponent/opponents. Deception of movement, ability to unbalance/control your opponent, the ability to rapidly adapt to multiple attacks as there is no need to weight and unweight your feet when moving are foundational to classical high level koryu kenjutsu. Kenjutsu Fundamentals Kuzushi/gathering/unbalancing 4th in a Series
Просмотров 1,5 тыс.Год назад
A great deal of classical Samurai military arts is very subtle and hidden. It is designed to be so. There are no big flashy movements. Deception is fundamental and this starts with movement. Learning to move in a classical manner is a lot of work and reprogramming, it is however the foundation for everything. Everything thing in a classical martial system is Kenjutsu, that includes the jujutsu/...
Kenjutsu Fundamentals-3rd in a series on Kuzushi, Gathering, with the Sword

It is essential in Kenjutsu that you be able to gather your opponent as you cut him. This unbalancing gives you both a beat of time and space to manage your relationship with your opponent and manage/control his blade. Aiuchi, mutual killing was common which is why the most evolved styles of Kenjutsu emphasized Kuzushi with the cut. No strength, no leaning, no flexing of muscles, reach through ...

Kenjutsu practice-Solo one hand Suburi

Suburi is a fundamental sword movement. It is the foundation of one of our Kenjutsu kata and it teaches us to program our movement according to Principle. As Kuroda Sensei once told me, "people are misunderstanding kata. Kata is not about real fighting, kata takes us into a different world." The mind and body are accessed in a fundamentally different way in classical Kenjutsu. The kata are ther...
Nami ryu Tameshigiri-Using your center to power two cuts
Просмотров 2,2 тыс.Год назад
In Nami ryu all motion originates from your center. We train not to separate our arms from the motion of our body, this is called Juntaiho. The concept is very much a part of the process of becoming one with your sword, first become one with your body. Later and with much training the arms can move without obvious body motion and still not be separated however that is a much more advanced pract...
Defense against a Prison Shank Attack.
Просмотров 3,9 тыс.2 года назад
The prison shank is a common knife attack. This solution comes directly from Kyoryu principles and movement. You must practice this slowly until all of the parts of this movement happen spontaneously and at the same time. Extreme relaxation, do not tense, do not lever, do not use your bicep. You are creating the Void at the same time you are taking up space. In the training example I am giving ...

Aiki jujutsu technique San Kajo explained by James Williams Sensei, Nami ryu Kaicho
Просмотров 8 тыс.4 года назад
In Nami ryu our Kenjutsu and our Aiki-jujutsu are identical movements. In essence, everything is kenjutsu. Close combat with edged weapons is a contact environment. In the classical training used for lethal combat the jujutsu/aikijujutsu is not leverage grappling based as in so many modern derivations. Time to solution is a critical factor as in any lethal engagement.
